Title: COROLLA LEADS TOYOTA TO SALES RECORDS
Date: Thu, Jul 3rd, 2008 19:19:14 pm

Toyota has capped a series of industry sales records with news that its four-cylinder Corolla is Australia's best-selling car this year.

It is the first time Corolla - or any Toyota - has topped the country's new-vehicle sales chart at the half-way point of a year.

The success of Corolla helped Toyota set industry records for sales in June as well as for the first half of the year and for the financial year.

Toyota lifted its June sales to 25,624 - the highest monthly tally ever achieved by a car company in Australia.

It was the first time any company has exceeded 25,000 sales in a month - and it gave Toyota a June market share of 24.1 per cent.

Official figures released today show Australian motorists bought 24,415 Corollas during the first six months of 2008 - an increase of more than 7.3 per cent on the same period last year.

Corolla was the best-selling vehicle in June with 5,023 sales, followed by Toyota's HiLux with 4,530.

Third place in June went to a six-cylinder rival that posted 4,274 sales for a six-month total of 23,323 cars - 1,092 fewer than Corolla.

Yaris (2,770 sales), Aurion (2,552) and Camry (2,261) were also among the top 10 sellers last month, while Prado (1,749) led the SUV market.

For the first six months of the year, Toyota's sales rose 9.4 per cent to a record 127,440 - more than 60,000 ahead of the second-placed company.

Toyota's market share so far this year is 23.5 per cent, or more than 1.2 percentage points higher than at the same stage last year.

During the financial year ended June 30, Toyota sold almost a quarter of a million vehicles - another industry record.

The financial-year total of 247,564 was more than 9.6 per cent ahead of the previous year's result.

No other company has reached 200,000 vehicles in any 12-month period.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the results were a tribute to the company's vehicles, staff and dealers.

"Toyota has a strong order bank and the overall market remains strong, especially for segments occupied by vehicles such as HiLux ute and Corolla," Mr Buttner said.

"We expect the second half to be tougher for the industry, although the final total should be similar to last year's record," he said.

"Toyota is still targeting a full calendar year result around 250,000, with improved market share."
