Title: ANOTHER WORLD-FIRST FOR TRD AURION
Date: Thu, Aug 2nd, 2007 16:16:31 pm
The
soon-to-be-released TRD Aurion will become the first mass produced car
in the world to be fitted with Eaton's new twin-vortices series (TVS)
supercharger. Eaton's local distributor, Melbourne-based Harrop Engineering, has
played a vital role in the development of the TRD Aurion V6, the first
production model ever manufactured by Toyota's specialist tuning arm. TRD's senior development engineer James Cathcart says Harrop's
involvement and the eagerness of Eaton in the United States have been
key factors in the successful development of the TRD Aurion's
powertrain. "TRD, Harrop and the Orbital Corporation in Perth have been the three
partners involved in the development of the TRD Aurion's 3.5-litre
supercharged engine," Mr Cathcart said. "Harrop has a very strong relationship with Eaton, and that has been a big positive for our engineers during development." Mr Cathcart said TRD management was initially sceptical about the
effectiveness of the TVS system as it was only a prototype when first
presented to them. "We tried a number of different options when we first started
developing the engine, but when we tested the TVS at Orbital we were
pleasantly surprised at the results," he said. "It provides us with more power, generates substantially less noise,
lowers inlet temperatures on the engine, is an elegant solution from a
packaging perspective, and is cost-effective to produce." Harrop Engineering Manager Clayton Stairmand was the lead design engineer for the TRD Aurion's supercharger. Mr Stairmand was quick to praise the commitment of TRD and Eaton in
developing the engine which has comfortably exceeded all targets set at
the start of the program. "Even though the TRD Aurion project was quite small compared to what
Eaton usually does, for them to produce four prototype TVS units solely
for TRD to test shows how committed they were to making it a success,"
said Mr Stairmand. "Although it has been a long process, it has been valuable for Harrop to work closely with an OE manufacturer like Toyota. "Together as a group, TRD, Harrop, Eaton and Orbital tried many
options, nothing was rushed and this is obvious from how well the
finished product has turned out." Mr Cathcart praised Harrop's thoroughness, highlighting it as a key reason why TRD chose the local manufacturer. "Harrop Engineering conducted a 300-hour durability test on the final production supercharger," he said. "It tested all operating ranges and it passed with no problems. They
even did a tear-down to make sure there were no mechanical issues and
everything looked brand new."
